Save a Space – a chance to support a favourite field

From Tuesday, October 18, people across the whole of Carmarthenshire will be able to go online and support their favourite of the county’s fields which are destined to achieve Queen Elizabeth II Field status in celebration of The Queen’s forthcoming diamond jubilee.

Carmarthenshire County Council has nominated seven major parks throughout the county for inclusion in the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge and some of these parks may be able to access funds through the scheme.  They will also have a plaque to signify their important status as part of this UK-wide scheme. The nominated fields are:

  • Carmarthen Park, Morfa Lane, Carmarthen, SA31
  • Llangunnor Park, Brynmeurig, Llangunnor, SA31
  • Llandovery Park, Broad Street, Llandovery, SA20
  • People’s Park (Parc y Dre’), Town Hall Square, Llanelli, SA15
  • Ammanford Park, Tirydail Lane, Ammanford, SA31
  • Penygroes Park, Waterloo Road, Penygroes, SA14
  • Park Le Conquet, Carmarthen Road, Llangunnor, SA19

The Save a Space opportunity will be available online for four weeks from October 18 and all it calls for is a click of the mouse to register support for a local field.  The Save a Space page can be accessed through the Queen Elizabeth II Fields website www.qe2fields.com

Carmarthenshire resident and former director of the National Playing Fields Association / Fields in Trust, Elsa Davies said “Carmarthenshire County Council has shown exceptional foresight in using the Queen Elizabeth II Fields scheme to protect these important fields for local people to enjoy.  I have played on a number of these fields and know how important they are to their communities. This is the first and one of the most exciting schemes chosen to celebrate The Queen’s significant anniversary – one which will resonate with local people now and over the years to come.”

Carmarthenshire County executive board member for regeneration and leisure services Cllr Clive Scourfield said: “This is a wonderful initiative that could benefit playing fields in our county and I would urge all those communities identified in the appeal to vote for their local field.”
