A school bus on the way to Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych was involved in a collision on the A478 at 8.15am this morning at Burton Bend between Cardigan and Penybryn.
The bus driver was attempting to avoid a traffic collision taking place ahead of him when he collided with a hedge. The bus became lodged against trees, and pupils had to get out through the emergency exit.
A total of 39 pupils were on the Richards Bros bus at the time. None were seriously injured, although a small number sustained minor injuries.
Coincidentally, three members of school staff were following the bus at the time of the incident, and they all stopped to help pupils alight from the bus, supported them and stayed with them until further assistance arrived.
A Midway Motors minibus collected the pupils from the scene of the accident and took them to school. A number of pupils contacted their parents from the scene of the accident and were taken home directly.
Sixteen pupils were transported to Ysgol y Preseli on the minibus, where senior members of staff, youth workers and the school nurse were waiting to offer support and warm drinks. They were not taken into lessons. Most of those pupils have since chosen to go home, and staff members are continuing to monitor and support those pupils who have chosen to stay at school.
An officer from Pembrokeshire County Council’s transport unit is assisting police enquiries at the scene of the accident.
Dyfed Powys Police confirmed that they attended the scene of the road traffic collision. The male driver of one of the vehicles involved has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is being held at Aberystwyth Police station.
