School Hosts Road Safety Competition

Pupils from Pen-Y-Bont School in Bridgend have taken part in an end of year Road Safety Competition which will help them to remain safe while out and about during the school holidays and beyond.

Local PCSOs Christian Freeth and Lisa Moore visited the school towards the end of term to hand out the prizes for the specially devised Road Safety competition.

PCSO Freeth said: “The children were told about the importance of Road Safety and were made aware of the dangers of the road and the importance of the five steps to safety.

“These are – Think – find safe place to cross; Stop – Stand on the pavement nearest to Kerb; Use your eyes and ears; Wait until its safe to cross; Look and listen.”

“South Wales Police and Pen-Y-Bont School worked together to devise a competition where the children designed a Road Safety poster or wrote a poem about Road Safety and the winners from each year group won prizes presented by Tesco and Safer Bridgend.

“One lucky winner will also have the chance for their poster to publicise thanks to Kam Wollage and the Road Safety Team. Kam also gave a talk at the school about road safety and we are grateful for the assistance of Road Safety team.”

PCSO Lisa Moore added: “Regardless of the result of the competition the children took their posters poems home to promote the Road Safety.

“The competition was a success we distributed over £200 worth of prizes to the children and they have all learned a valuable road safety advice which will help keep them be safe over the summer period.

“We want to thank Pen-Y-Bont School for letting us do these talks and work with all the pupils.”
