School officers get a safer Vale kick start

During the school summer holidays last year the four Schools Liaison Officers for the Vale of Glamorgan took nearly 250 pupils away for affordable outward bound activities to Storey Arms, Brecon.

The trips were possible thanks to funding from local Town Councils and businesses and Penarth Rotary Club. The children had a fantastic time but the extreme summer weather caused the officers some concern.

PC Chris Thompson, School’s Liaison Officer for Barry said:  “Mountain weather can change very quickly and we were fortunate that the Storey Arms Centre were able to loan us the wet weather gear for the walks.  We were lucky the clothing happened to be available but it is not a long term option”

As a result of the success of the summer camps, the Officers have set up a mentoring scheme to take pupils on day walks throughout the year. The aim of this scheme is to continue to develop the contact with the pupils in an environment which is ideal for building a positive relationship with the Police and partnership agencies.
