Children from a Cardiff primary school will be getting into character this week to mark their celebration of books.
As part of Birchgrove Primary’s annual book week, the youngsters will be dressing up as a character from their favourite book and holding a parade on Friday June 11.
Roald Dahl’s Enormous Crocodile, Peter Pan, Harry Potter and Goldilocks are bound to be favourite choices for the pupils while members of staff are also planning to get into the spirit by portraying their own favourite characters.
The parade is the culmination of a week-long focus of books and reading to encourage children to discover and enjoy reading.
Librarians from the local Rhiwbina Library will be paying a visit to the school to promote the library and read some stories while class teachers will be on the move throughout the school during the week to share books with different age groups.
Competitions will be held for the children to design their own bookmarks and the front cover of their favourite book and the winners will be presented with prizes including books and stationery.
Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said:
“Reading is such a huge part of education and it’s great to hear about children enjoying their reading. I think the activities Birchgrove Primary School has planned this week are a wonderful way to engage youngsters in books and encourage a lifelong love of reading.”
Birchgrove deputy headteacher, Paula Broughton, said: “We hold a book week every year to promote books and reading to the children. We want to share our favourite children’s books with them and promote the love of reading we have with them.
“We are also encouraging parents and children to continue to share and enjoy books at home and parents will be invited along to the parade on Friday to see all the characters lining up. We’re looking forward to a really fun day and can’t wait to see the characters that’ll be coming through the doors on Friday morning.”
