Gwynedd councillors have voted to reorganise education in the Berwyn catchment area in a decision that could lead to an investment of £10.2 million in the catchment area’s schools.
At a meeting of the full Council on 12 May 2011, councillors voted in favour of establishing a Lifelong Learning Campus in Y Bala to replace Ysgol y Berwyn, Ysgol Beuno Sant and Ysgol Bro Tegid in the town, as well as upgrading Ysgol O M Edwards and investing in Ysgol Ffridd y Llyn and Ysgol Bro Tryweryn.
In the same meeting, councillors voted in favour of a proposal to close Ysgol y Parc by 31 August 2012, and to provide places for Y Parc pupils at Ysgol O M Edwards, Llanuwchllyn. At present there are 19 pupils attending Ysgol y Parc which is located three miles from Ysgol O M Edwards.
These decisions follow a period of detailed discussion in the catchment area along with a statutory consultation period held over January and February 2011.
Gwynedd Council has presented a bid to the Welsh Assembly Government for £7.7 million towards the £10.2 million plan to reorganise education in the Berwyn catchment area. The Council expects a decision from the Welsh Assembly Government during the summer of 2011.
At the full Council meeting (12 May 2011), councillors approved the following recommendations:
- in order to facilitate the establishment of the proposed Lifelong Learning Campus approve the proposal to close Ysgol y Berwyn, Ysgol Beuno Sant and Ysgol Bro Tegid on 31 August 2015 and publish statutory notices pursuant to Section 29 the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to that effect.
- approve the proposal to establish a Community School on the sites of Ysgol Y Berwyn and Ysgol Beuno Sant to admit pupils of the age range 3-19 as part of the establishment of a new Lifelong Campus in the town of Bala to open on 1 September 2015 and publish statutory notices pursuant to Section 28 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to that effect
- approve the proposal to close Ysgol y Parc by 31 August 2012, providing places for children in the catchment-area at Ysgol O M Edwards, Llanuwchllyn. Following the completion of upgrading works at Ysgol O M Edwards, and publish statutory notices pursuant to Section 29 the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to that effect.
- the above Statutory Notices are to be published when the appropriate capital resources have been confirmed.
