After signing-up with the Salvation Army Schools Clothing Collection scheme, parents and staff at Stackpole School – together with members of the local community – have gathered 535.5 kilos of unwanted clothing – over half a tonne.
Pupils watched a DVD which showed them what happened to the clothing once it was taken from the school. They were surprised to learn that clothing not good enough for re-sale in charity shops could be made into carpets.
Through the scheme, the Salvation Army will pay the school for their recycling.
Said headteacher, Mrs Jane Rees: “This is an excellent scheme which has involved everyone in the village and through which the Salvation Army will pay the school for its recycling.
“The school is fully committed to recycling and this has shown the pupils how their old clothes can be put to further use.”
She added that it was hoped to make another collection in the autumn.
