Schoolgirl wins police anti-bullying poster competition

A Newport schoolgirl will see her winning anti-bullying poster displayed around the Shaftesbury area of the city.

Year Five Brynglas Junior School pupil Shayma Webb won a competition organised by Newport City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team to improve the relationship between the police and local children. Head teacher Linda Facey was pleased to support the competition to ensure pupils feel comfortable talking to police and to highlight Anti-Bullying Week.

The winning design was adapted and distributed among local shops to highlight the problems of bullying. In addition, the winner received £20 in shop vouchers and three runners-up were selected to receive £10 vouchers.

Shaftesbury ward police officers presented the winners with their prizes at a school assembly.  As part of the presentation, the officers held a question and answer session about bullying and the people who they can report bullying to.

Pc Dave Castree, ward officer for Shaftesbury, said:
“We are hoping that the children find it easy to approach police officers with any problems.

For the poster competition, we decided on a topic that can affect all children and we are delighted with the winning design. The local community have been very enthusiastic about the winning poster as it is a subject that can affect anyone at any age.

All our local shops have been eager to display the poster. I would like to thank the children of Brynglas School for the work they put into the competition.”
