Preparations are underway to celebrate the granting of the Freedom of the County to the Royal Welsh Regiment on June 11 in Denbigh and schoolchildren across the county have been invited to do their bit by taking part in a series of competitions to mark this special occasion.
Infants have been challenged to make the longest piece of brightly coloured bunting they can, a poster competition to advertise the event is being organised for the juniors and a poetry competition for secondary school students – with prizes for the winners and their schools.
The granting of the Freedom of the County to the Royal Welsh is given for ‘eminent services to the county or county borough’ and means that the name of the regiment will be placed on the Roll of Honorary Freemen of the county. The council gives the right of the regiment to march through the streets on all ceremonial occasions with colours flying, drums beating and bayonets fixed. The regiment can return every three or four years to exercise this right.
This will be a very special day for Denbighshire and we hope that people from across the county will join us to celebrate and offer the warmest Denbighshire welcome to the regiment.
They hope to see the streets of Denbigh thronged with crowds ready to welcome and show their appreciation to the brave men and women who serve our country.”
The fine detail of the itinerary is still being put together but it is expected that the regiment will be marching from the council offices in Denbigh at Caledfryn and through town for the special ceremony in the town centre before a final march down Vale Street to the leisure centre for refreshments.
They have a page on their website at www.denbighshire.gov.uk, which will be updated as the details are confirmed.
