The Enviro-Rock event of the year is set to take place this month as talented schools from across Rhondda Cynon Taf are preparing to rock-out this summer as the magnificent enviro-mentally friendly rock concert reaches the final stages.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Streetcare Team, who organize this major competition are busy working with local schools alongside its partners to help them finalise their tracks, which are based on one of several environmental themes including zero waste, reduce reuse recycle, food waste recycling and environmental crime.
The fifth annual Enviro-Vision Song Quest is gearing up to take place at Muni Arts Centre in Pontypridd on 12th July 2011 from 7pm and will feature a special performance by Rhondda Cynon Taf’s very own X Factor star, Tom Richards, who will also be judging this year’s competition.
Tom will be joined by Jessie Jenkins, aged 21 from Porth, who is another special Rhondda Cynon Taf starlet who is tipped to be the next big thing. Jessie who has been singing and performing since she was 8 years old, is a former Enviro-vision winner and she is currently working with young people to help them with their singing and song writing as part of the Council’s Cultural Services Take-part project. Jessie is also studying Music Tech at the University of Glamorgan and is tipped to be a familiar face in households very soon.
As well as these two local stars, local band, Make-It project winners and battle of the band finalist -IndiGo Modem will be performing. Indigo Modem are a pop/rock band made up of six young men aged 17 and 18 from YG Garth Olwg.
The shortlist of school bands to perform in this special showcase has now been drawn up and groups from Pontypridd High School, Tonyrefail Comprehensive School, Y Pant Comprehensive School, Aberdare Girls School, Mountain Ash Comprehensive School, Hawthorn High School and Tonypandy Community College will take to the stage on the big night.
The schools will now join Tom Richards, Jessie Jenkins and IndiGo Modem at the event to perform their final tracks live in the special concert in front of hundreds of people in the Muni Arts Centre, Pontypridd.
Each of the entrants will receive a certificate as a token of appreciation for supporting this very important initiative whilst the winner will receive £600, second place will receive £300 and the third place will receive £100.
The winners will also get the chance to perform in front of thousands of people at this year’s Ponty’s Big Weekend.
The 2011 Enviro-Vision Song Quest will mark the fifth joint-project between the Council’s Streetcare Services Team and Sonig Youth Music Industry, which is part of the Council’s Cultural Services department.
Councillor Anthony Christopher, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services said: “Year on year the Enviro Vision Song Quest gets better and better. The standard of this year’s performances promises again to surpass all previous years which seems unbelievable considering how high the standard has always been.
“The various themes running through the songs will clearly reflect our commitment to raising awareness of such issues as fly-posting, dog fouling, littering, recycling, flytipping, graffiti and we hope such messages will remain in the minds of all residents across the County Borough.”
