A search has been launched for tenants for a flagship housing development of independent living homes for older and vulnerable people in Llandudno.
Housing association Cartrefi Conwy is replacing two sheltered housing schemes in the town’s Trinity Avenue with the new state-of-the-art homes.
The 26 one and two-bedroom apartments are being built to the highest standards and will be ready for people to move there in early summer while the show home is available to be viewed now.
The ground-breaking development called Cysgod y Gogarth (Shadow of the Orme) , sets new standards in energy efficiency.
Fronting on to St Andrew’s Avenue, it will have ground, first and second floor levels, with the upper floors being served by a lift.
Each home is designed to be fully accessible for disabled tenants and is in line with the Royal National Institute for the Blind’s Visibly Better campaign.
The tenants will also benefit from a modern bathroom and an attractive fitted kitchen.
A key feature of the development is that it has been designed around a “community hub” area where residents can go to mingle with friends and enjoy a range of social and leisure activities.
As part of the development, four new family homes are also being built and the Tan y Gogarth element of the scheme will comprise two two-bedroom properties and two three-bedroom houses.
Cartrefi Conwy Chief Executive Andrew Bowden described the development as a “showcase” for how a sheltered housing scheme of the future should be provided.
He said: “Our ambition for Cysgod y Gogarth has been to provide new, affordable and accessible accommodation for older and vulnerable people from the Conwy area and particularly Llandudno.
“Our intention has been to create homes where people can feel secure and which is also a hub for the whole community.
“We want it to have the wow factor and be somewhere special to live for a generation that deserves the best. This development will be best in class – it’s high quality without the price tag of extra care.”
Clare Shiland, Cartrefi Conwy’s Head of Neighbourhood Services, said: “We have eight of the original residents coming back and we’re accepting applications for the remaining units, so we’re delighted that we will be welcoming both old and new residents to the development.
“Cysgod y Gogarth has been designed with the RNIB’s Visibly Better campaign in mind which demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that the new development is suitable for tenants with visual impairments and fit for the future.
“These are purpose built homes for life where the tenants will feel safe and secure – and better still they are available to let.”

Four new family homes, named Tan Y Gogarth, are also being built at the site and will comprise two and three bedroom houses. These properties are available to applicants through Conwy County Borough Council’s First Steps Affordable Housing register and are suited to applicants who are in employment, but for whatever reason cannot get on the property ladder. The rent is around 80 per cent of local market rent and are an opportunity for families looking for an affordable home in the Llandudno area.
