Wrexham’s annual sausage competition looks set to sizzle this year with local butchers gearing up to do battle.
The competition is being organised by Wrexham Council as part of the town’s St David’s Day celebrations, and is open to butchers across the borough.
Entrants have to make their sausages from scratch using an original recipe, with professional judge Dennis Eliot having the final say on who is crowned champ.
Last year the title was taken by Mark Lewis of Lewis’ Farm Shop in Eyton.
However, organisers have added some extra flavour to this year’s competition. As well as an overall champion, there will be winners in two separate sub-categories for traditional pork sausages and speciality sausages.
The results will be announced at 1.30pm on Saturday, February 27 as part of the special food and craft market being held on Queen’s Square between 10am and 4pm.
Free samples will be available, while some butchers competing in the event will also be selling their special bangers on the day.
The council is also organising a St David’s Day parade through the town centre on Monday, March 1.
Councillor Rodney Skelland, lead member for regeneration and corporate governance, said: “The sausage competition has proved very popular since it was introduced several years ago, and it’s a great way to raise the profile of locally produced food.
“The council organises events at key points throughout the year to help town centre businesses by bringing more people into Wrexham, and we hope both residents and visitors will enjoy the celebrations being staged in honour of Wales’ patron saint.”
