Searching for Christmas stars in Newport

Calling all choirs! The search is on to find a local choir to switch on the Christmas lights in Newport.

The hugely popular event will take place on November 22 in the city centre. The successful choir will not only get to switch on the lights with the Mayor of Newport, but will also perform on the day in front of thousands of people.

If you think your choir has got what it takes then we would love to hear from you. There are no age restrictions and the competition is open to both traditional and contemporary choirs.

Newport city centre manager Sarah Williams, said: “We are looking for a local choir to add an exciting twist to this year’s event. Last year’s competition for a young solo singer saw an unprecedented number of talented entrants. We hope this year will be just as successful.”

Last year’s overall winner was Shelby Morgan who performed on the day in front of over 10,000 people.

This year’s city centre Christmas festivities begin on Sunday 22 November with the Christmas light switch-on event. From 12 noon, visitors will enjoy live music and dance, seasonal markets, street entertainment and interactive acts. The lights will be switched on at 5pm followed by a firework and live band finale.

This year’s events are being organised by Newport City Council in conjunction with the South Wales Argus and Red Dragon Radio.

If you would like to enter, please send a DVD or CD of your choir performing to:
