It’s not just Wimbledon that is famous for its strawberries, the Cardiff Festival strawberries are also a sure sign that summer has began.
The wait is nearly over for the 2010 Cardiff Festival, which starts on Thursday, July 1.
Stretching from July 1 until September 4, ‘Strawberry Fever’ will take over the city with a full programme of events to entertain all the family, with a number of the events being free.
Kick-starting the festival is the Cardiff Castle Open Air Theatre on Thursday July 1.
A perfect summer’s evening couldn’t get any better than settling down in the grounds of historic Cardiff Castle to watch one of Shakespeare’s masterpieces. The show will be at Cardiff Castle for two night on the 1 and 2 July.
Returning for the 6th year in 2010 The Lord Chamberlain’s Men present The Tempest. Founded in 2004, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men Theatre Company is the modern incarnation of Shakespeare’s original troupe of the same name. Performing with an all-male cast.
The Tempest is a play that has delighted audiences for almost 400 years and is regarded by almost all scholars to be Shakespeare’s last complete work. Although clearly a comedy in the classical definition of the genre, this late masterpiece is very concerned with issues such as the nature of authority, the clashing demands of revenge and forgiveness, of justice and mercy as well as dwelling on the affairs of the heart.
Along with old Cardiff Festival favourites such as Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend and Cardiff International Food and Drink festival, new events will include Rock ‘n’ Raft, at the newly opened Cardiff International White Water in the International Sports Village. The event will combine live music, with the thrill of white water rafting and the first time the Cardiff Wales LGBT Mardi Gras joins the Cardiff Festival programme.
Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “I am looking forward to the Cardiff festival beginning. The festival really is a highlight in the city’s calendar with some fantastic events planned. I hope residents and visitors will enjoy the programme we have put together, including some fantastic new events.”
