Seven Sisters had to withstand a spirited challenge from Caernarfon before running out 31-5 victors in the WRU Women’s National Plate final held at Maesteg on Sunday.
The game was a hard affair with Caernarfon controlling the first 20 minutes but unable to make it count.
Seven Sisters No 8 Cari Bowen-Davies broke through some weak tackling to put scrum half and captain Bev Mainwaring through for the first score of the afternoon. Another two tries by Jami Davies and Cari Bowen-Davies saw Seven Sisters edge 17-0 in front.
Two tries by centre Helen Jones put the issue beyond doubt but the north Walians refused to throw the towel in.
Eventually Lauren Hassett ran over 80 meters to put Caernarfon on the scoreboard. This led to great pressure by the Cofis in the last 10 minutes but it did not bear fruit and the game ended with Seven Sisters 31-5 winners.
Victorious coach Ade Howell said the final score-line didn’t to Caernarfon justice. “Caernarfon played really well but we were able to close them down at the breakdown. But they looked dangerous at times with their back three particularly sharp.”
This game was the farewell match for two stalwarts of Caernarfon Ladies. Both Kate Jones and Eurwen Williams are hanging up their boots after over 10 years of service to the Cofis Ladies team and Clwb Rygbi Caernarfon. Jones and William’s tackle count during the game was as always, phenomenal with Jones making more than one try saving tackle.
