Rhondda Cynon Taf Council staff will continue to work throughout the night to reduce the impact on residents and visitors to the county borough of today’s heavy snowfall (Friday November 26).
Since the beginning of the week precautionary gritting has taken place on roads throughout the county borough.
On Thursday evening 75 tonnes of salt was spread on the county borough road network by the 10 mainland salting vehicles.
At 8.30am this morning a further 75 tonnes of salt treated the highway infrasctructure. This evening it will be repeated once more throughout the county borough. No further snow is expected.
Unreasonably early snow swept through Rhondda Cynon Taf from late morning and caused the early closure of a handful of schools – mostly in the Cynon Valley area.
A severe weather warning of heavy snow was issued by the Met Office at 1pm today.
Council staff have continued to treat roads to try and alleviate the problems associated with the inclement weather as much as possible on the general public. On Saturday the workforce will treat shopping and public areas by hand.
Late this afternoon a bus blocked the A4233 Maerdy mountain road to Aberdare and the road is currently closed while the emergency services assist with moving the vehicle.
Similarly Llantrisant Road from Graig, Pontypridd to Penycoedcae has also been temporarily closed due to a car blocking the highway. The Council is working with South Wales Police and the Fire and Rescue Service to move the vehicle in order to further grit the road and allow traffic movement,
Motorists are being warned to take extra care and seek advice about conditions before venturing on to the roads.
Temperatures remain well below average for this time of the month.
