World renowned Wales rugby international and Osprey’s winger Shane Williams, today swapped his rugby kit for academic robes, when he received an Honorary Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contribution to the region.
Shane received his MSc (Honorary) Degree during Swansea University’s Winter Degree and Award Congregations which took place at the Brangwyn Hall today. Rhodri Morgan, Swansea University’s Chancellor and Dan Ryan-Lowes, President of the Swansea University Athletics Union (who nominated Shane for the Honorary Degree) were on stage to see Shane receive his award from Raymond Ciborowski, Swansea University’s Registrar and Head of Administration.
Shane joined over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students from Swansea University who received their awards during the two-day Winter Congregations. The Winter Congregations are held for students who have successfully completed their studies since July 2011.
Speaking about the award Shane said: “I am delighted and honoured to receive this award. It’s very humbling – I never expected to receive anything like this.”
Swansea University’s Winter Degree and Award Congregations take place just a few days before tickets go on sale on Monday 30th January, for this years Welsh Varsity match, which takes place on 2nd May 2012. The sought after tickets are available from www.swansea-union.co.uk . The Welsh Varsity takes place every year between Swansea University and Cardiff University. Over 25 events, to find the deserving winner of the Varsity Shield, take place over the course of a week. The centrepiece rugby “head-to-head” match takes place on the Wednesday evening in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Over 14,500 spectators attended last years match.
