Should Wrexham Bid for City Status: Have Your Say

Residents throughout Wrexham are being encouraged to let Wrexham Council know whether they believe Wrexham should put itself forward in the competition for City Status which will be awarded to one town in the UK in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Wrexham Council’s Executive Board has agreed to consult with residents to gauge their support or otherwise for Wrexham to submit a bid for Wrexham to be granted this award.

Information is now available on Wrexham Council’s website (www.wrexham.gov.uk/citystatus)to give residents information regarding the reasons for putting forward a bid and to answer some of the questions raised regarding the implications for Wrexham if a bid is successful.

Those residents not able to access the internet can find the information at all council receptions, housing estate offices, Wrexham library,the county’s leisure and activity centres and Contact Wrexham on Lord Street from Tuesday. Anyone who cannot access any of these premises can contact the number below and a member of staff will be pleased to advise and offer help. Internet access is also free at all Wrexham libraries and staff will be on hand to assist in accessing the online information if required.

Cllr Aled Roberts, Leader of Wrexham Council, said:

“Before any bid for city status is put forward for consideration it is essential we have the support of the local community. We are now encouraging as many of you as possible to let us know whether or not Wrexham Council should put forward such a bid. I hope the information required to make your decision is available but if not please feel free to either email or telephone Wrexham Council for further information using the information below.”

A report will be put before Wrexham’s Executive Board on 8 March with the results of the consultation exercise to allow them to make a decision on whether or not a bid will be put forward by the Council.
