Commenting on the recommendation today by the Silk Commission that all energy planning consents below 350MW should be devolved to the Welsh Government, Jessica McQuade, Policy and Advocacy Officer at WWF Cymru, said:
“Giving ministers in Cardiff Bay more control over energy could be good news for Wales if they use the powers to increase generation from wind, wave and solar sources. That could bring thousands of sustainable jobs, help tackle climate change and provide a more resilient energy system in the face of rising fuel prices.
“For people in Wales to see benefits of these increased powers we’d also need to see stronger ambition from Welsh Government and a green energy ‘routemap’ for the development of renewable energy.
“Wales currently lags way behind Scotland in renewable energy, with only 7.9% of our electricity from renewable sources. Further devolution could be an opportunity to address that.”
