Hundreds of schoolchildren will be side-stepping like Shane Williams at a Swansea rugby festival this week as the build-up to the Six Nations reaches fever pitch.
Children from 20 primary schools across the city will descend on Gowerton’s Elba Sports Complex to take part in the Dragon Sport Six Nations TAG Rugby Festival organised by Swansea Council’s Sports Development Team.
The festival will include a round robin of matches between pupils in years three and four with sports students from Gower College on hand to referee.
British Lions, Wales and Ospreys prop Adam Jones and Ospreys centre Jonathan Spratt have also been lined-up to make guest appearances.
Helen John, of Swansea Council’s Sports Development Team, said: “The build-up to Wales against England and the start of the Six Nations Championship on Friday night is really gathering pace and this event will help celebrate everything that’s fantastic about the tournament.
“We’re fortunate that high-profile players from the Ospreys will be able to pass on top tips to the children taking part and we hope we’ll be able to identify the next generation of rugby talent.”
Dragon Sport is a Sport Wales initiative funded by the National Lottery that’s designed to offer seven to 11-year-olds fun and enjoyable sporting opportunities.
The programme is promoted and delivered through full-time Dragon Sport Co-ordinators based at local authorities in Wales. It’s also intended to provide youngsters with a more diverse range of sports while at the same time attracting children who simply don’t have the opportunity to play sport outside of their school PE lessons.
A total of eight sports are available in the Dragon Sports scheme. They include rugby, athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, tennis and golf.
