Snow: Police advice to motorists and the public

With more severe snow and bad weather conditions forecast for south Wales in the next 48 hours approximately, South Wales Police issued the following advice to motorists and the general public.

Chief Superintendent Sue Hayes of South Wales Police said,

“Where travel is absolutely necessary, drivers should make use of main roads and avoid less-used routes, allow extra time for their journey and ensure they allow an appropriate distance between them and the vehicle ahead.

“The Traffic Wales website has been updated with all road closure and transport link information and officers are urging everyone to check the details of their journey before leaving home today including public transport via bus and rail: www.traffic-wales.com

“It is always a good idea to check your vehicle’s condition, such as oil, water, tyres and brakes and make sure that the windscreen and lights are free from dirt and debris. When setting out on a journey, it’s also advisable to check your mobile phone is charged and you have a blanket or spare coat for warmth and, water and food in case you break down.

“We would also advise people who are thinking of climbing that conditions can be treacherous. If people do decide to go mountain walking or climbing we advise them to make sure they tell someone responsible where they are going, what route they are taking and what time they are expected to return.

“We would ask them to arrange with friends and family to ensure that if they are missing for any period, police and rescuers should be called as soon as possible. We would also ask climbers and walkers to make sure they are fully equipped, have a mobile phone and emergency equipment including flares.”
