A rugby ball signed by the team that secured an historic third Grand Slam in eight years has fetched £300 at a charity auction.
And a football shirt signed by the equally famous Swans team that’s made waves in the Premier League and around the world went for £200 at Swansea’s Lord Mayor’s Charity Dinner and Auction.
Lord Mayor Cllr Ioan Richard said the event staged at the Liberty Stadium raised more than £3,000 for the medical wards at Morriston and Singleton Hospitals and was one of the highlights of his mayoral year.
He said: “I’m not surprised at the interest there was among those who came to the charity event in the two autographed items. The Swans and the Welsh rugby team have been drawing attention to themselves from around the world.
“I’m sure that those who bid for the items will find the value of their new possessions increasing over the years when it becomes clear just how signficant the teams’ successes this season have been.”
He added: “The charity dinner and auction was without doubt one of the highlights of my mayoral year. I’d like to thank those who came to it and those who were so kind to donate items for auction for making the event so memorable and profitable for my chosen charities.”
More than 120 people attended the dinner on March 30 at the Liberty Stadium, one of the final events of the mayoral calendar.
Cllr Richard said: “I’ve had a fantastic time as the official ambassador for our great city and it’s been a brilliant opportunity to raise funds for the medical wards at Morriston and Singleton hospitals.
“The work the staff do there to support our local communities is wonderful and the money raised from the range of charity events I’ve been involved in this year will help make a real difference for patients to make their stay in hospital more comfortable.”
