Caldicot Castle will mark St David’s Day on Sunday 27th February with a gala day celebrating Welsh traditions and culture. Entrance is free, the fun starts at 11am and on offer will be fine singing, harp music, local craft stalls, costume displays and a chance for aspiring young cooks to create two Welsh dishes.
This pre-season event will also include historical enactment, dancing from local schoolchildren, displays of weapons and demonstrations of archery plus an opportunity to make a paper dragon or love spoon. Refreshments will be available and visitors can walk off their tea and cake on an instructive courtyard trail featuring information about our patron saint.
Going back in time, a Victorian school ma’am will be on hand to test pupils’ knowledge of Welsh phrases and a nineteenth century doctor from Blaenavon steelworks will give the lowdown on early anaesthetic, surgical supports and industrial disease in a hilarious look at medicine in the days before penicillin.
The day will come to a close around 4pm with a Gymanfa Ganu/Songs of Praise style grand sing-a-long organised by local churches.
Erica Sheppard, the castle’s temporary Events & Activities Organiser said: “Everyone is welcome for what we expect to be an enjoyable day out. We’ve booked nice weather but please bring your wellies and brollies, just in case. We look forward to seeing you”.
