St Davids lifeboat goes to aid of kayakers

On Sunday 8 August at 4.35pm, following reports made to Milford Haven Coastguards, the St Davids RNLI inshore lifeboat (ILB) under the command of helmsman Dave Ward launched on service to the aid of a kayak with two people onboard who were in difficulties.

St Davids RNLI all-weather lifeboat (ALB) were also paged, but were not required to launch.

The kayak, with a middle aged male and his eight year old granddaughter, where approximately one nautical mile off St Davids Head.

They had been caught out by the wind and tide and were unable to make it safely ashore.

The first vessel on scene was the pleasure craft Dorothy Mary which had two crew members of the St Davids RNLI onboard.

They checked that the kayakers were ok, and stood by until the arrival of the ILB.

Once on scene the ILB took the kayakers and their kayak back to the safety of Whitesands Beach, where they were handed into the care of RNLI lifeguards.

The ILB then proceeded back to station, rehousing at 5.15pm.

The volunteer crew were Dave Ward, Neil Thomas and Simon Thornton.
