On Wednesday 13 October, personnel from the St Davids RNLI lifeboat station will be marking the centenary of the lifeboat tragedy of 1910 when the lifeboat Gem was wrecked on the Bitches Reef in Ramsey Sound with the loss of three of her crew.
The programme of events for 13 October is as follows:
9am: Both St Davids RNLI lifeboats will launch to lay a wreath at the Bitches Reef, Ramsey Sound. Simultaneously the Dean of St Davids, Very Rev Jonathon Lean, along with the Chairman and President of the St Davids RNLI branch will lay a wreath at the graves of the three lifeboatmen at St Davids cemetery.
12pm: Memorial service at St Davids cathedral with the Bishop of St Davids, Right Rev Wyn Evans taking the address.
1pm (approx): The unveiling and dedication of a new Gem plaque at the Memorial Garden at the Cross Square St Davids. The unveiling of the plaque will be carried out by Sir Robert Hastie, Vice President of the RNLI. Members of the public are invited to join RNLI personnel at these events.
