Stand Up for Play! Free Event in Cardiff Bay

In celebration of National Play Day, Cardiff Council’s Children’s Play Services are hosting a big free event for children on Wednesday, August 3 at the Oval Basin in Cardiff Bay from noon until  4pm.

The campaign is a nationwide celebration of the child’s right to play and raises the awareness about some serious issues affecting children’s play, including traffic and wider safety concerns in public spaces.

This year the Playday campaign is focussing on all aspects of play and why it is so important. Organisers are calling on everyone to celebrate the ‘national day for play’ in whatever way they choose to help strengthen the call to protect children’s right to play.

This will be the 24th year that Cardiff has celebrated National Playday and each year the event has grown larger and larger, with last years event attracting around 3500 visitors.

The event will offer a wide variety of activities which children may not usually have the chance to experience and this year’s attractions will include reptile tent, sensory garden, arts and crafts, sporting activities and a Radio Cardiff DJ Workshop as well as more traditional forms of play.

The day is aimed at children aged between five and 15 however organisers believe you are never too young or too old to play and celebrate by playing!

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “National Playday is a fantastic event in realising the importance of play in the learning and development of children.

Cardiff Council Children’s Play Staff look forward to utilising their vast amount of skills and experience in the play section and we are looking forward to delivering a fantastic event which supports and encourages a child’s right to play in the local community.”
