Stars out for Earth Hour this weekend

On Saturday Swansea residents will join celebrities such as Tom Jones, Zoe Salmon, Amanda Holden and Danielle Lineker as part of a global event to celebrate the planet.

All they have to do is switch off their lights at 8.30pm on March 26th for WWF’s Earth Hour designed to highlight the need to reduce the impact of energy waste on the earth.

Swansea Council is the leading the switch off with major civic buildings including the Guildhall and Civic Centre about to go dark alongside iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids of Giza and the Empire State Building.

Chris Holley, Leader of Swansea Council, said: “WWF’s Earth Hour is a fun and positive global event. I hope people will take part and plunge Swansea into darkness for a good cause.

“Earth Hour is a reminder that we all at times take this unique planet and all it has to offer far too much for granted and every individual has the power to help protect their planet.”

Welsh singing superstar Tom Jones said: “Be an important part of something big, register for WWF’s Earth Hour on 26 March at 8.30pm.

“You’ll be joining billions of people across the world in showing world leaders you want action on climate change.”

Danielle Lineker added: “Whether you’re going out or staying in with the family, make sure you do something memorable for WWF’s Earth Hour.

“It’s the world’s biggest display of hope and a powerful reminder that we only have one planet Earth.”

In 2010 a record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. More than 4,600 cities took part including Swansea.

Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off.

Millions of people across the world from all walks of life also turned off their own lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of this planet.
