Neath Port Talbot Council’s Physical Activity & Sport Service organised a schools’ football tournament for pupils with a disability at the Afan Lido in Port Talbot recently.
Competitions were held for secondary schools in under14 and under 16 age groups. There were 14 teams entered into the first competition, all competing for the Stephen Galsworthy Memorial Shield.
Stephen was an accomplished footballer and played for the Afan Lido Football Club, gaining his Boys and Girls Club of Wales International Cap.
Neath Port Talbot‘s Disability Sport Wales Development Officer, Vicki Radmore, said, “To hold this competition at the Afan Lido is a huge tribute to Stephen and hopefully we, too, can find our next international champion.”
Mickey Miles, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Football AssociationWales Trust Area Development Officer, said, “The skills were exceptional and these tournaments certainly help to identify home grown talent and the possibility of future internationals.”
Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “This is a fantastic event that raises the confidence and self esteem of the children.
“It enables them to explore and develop their skills. It tests their developmental, team building and social skills, whilst promoting a better life through active living.
“We would like to thank Corus for sponsoring this event and also our Governing body partners.”
