On Tuesday 19th April from 6pm Stonewall Cymru are holding Hustings for the Welsh Assembly elections focusing on sexual orientation issues in Wales, hosted by Enfys, Cardiff University’s LGBT Staff Network at the Optometry building. The event will give lesbian, gay and bisexual people their opportunity to ask what the main political parties will do for them in the next Assembly term.
Vaughan Roderick, BBC Wales political presenter and Welsh language blogger, will host a cross-party debate with representatives from the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Plaid Cymru parties focusing on how their policies for the next Assembly will affect lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru said “With lesbian, gay and bisexual people representing over 6% of the electorate in Wales and issues such as homophobic bullying being endemic in Welsh schools, the Assembly elections are an important opportunity to ensure that sexual orientation issues are included in Assembly policies.”
He added “Nearly two thirds of young lesbian, gay and bisexual people experience homophobic bullying in our schools yet two thirds of secondary school staff do not always respond to such bullying. It is vital that lesbian, gay and bisexual people across Wales have the opportunity to find out what candidates would do to ensure they are included and supported at home, at school and at work.”
This hustings event will give voters to the opportunity to hear how each party has responded to Stonewall Cymru’s election manifesto in the areas of education, healthcare, public services, hate crime and representation.
Karen Cooke, Co-Chair of Enfys Said “We are happy to support Stonewall Cymru with this event and welcome everyone to the University and hope they enjoy the evening.”
