Pupils from four primary schools will be visiting their local church next week to hear the Christmas story in an unforgettable interactive tour.
About 150 children will visit St David’s Church, Tonyrefail, for a new event called Experience Christmas. They will be guided around displays at the church in small groups, hearing stories about Christmas at each one from parishioners acting as story-tellers.
Each storyteller will focus on a particular aspect of the Nativity – preparation, announcement, promises, journey, message and gift. The children will have time for activities and reflection at each display before gathering around the crib to hear the wonderful message of birth of Jesus and thinking about what gift they would give him.
The event is organised by the Vicar of Tonyrefail, the Revd Ruth Moverley who enlisted 20 parishioners to help make the displays and act as storytellers for the week. She said, “People volunteered with enthusiasm because we all wanted to help the children engage with the events leading up to the birth of Jesus in ways that will be interactive and stimulating, enabling children to re-discover the mystery of this wonderful season.”
The schools taking part in the event from Tuesday to Friday are: Cwmlai, Tref-y-Rhig, Tonyrefail Primary and Ysgol Gymraeg Tonyrefail. Most of the children will be aged 7-8.
