Local authorities in Wales have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds kennelling stray dogs over the last five years figures obtained by Shadow Minister for Local Government, Darren Millar AM, have revealed.
Commenting on the figures, Mr Millar said: “It is concerning that significant sums have spent on kennelling stray dogs at a time when frontline services are struggling because of consistently poor financial settlements by the Assembly Government.
The figures also reveal that thousands of complaints regarding noise pollution from barking dogs have been received.
Mr Millar added: “These figures are indicative of a bigger problem. While the vast majority of dog owners do their upmost to ensure that their pets do not cause a nuisance to neighbours and the community in general, there are some that do not.
“Small measures, like microchipping dogs, can make a great difference as it means strays can be returned to their owners far quicker than previously.
“The Assembly Government must look at working in greater conjunction with local authorities and dog and animal charities and organisations to ensure that kennelling costs and nuisance caused by stray dogs is minimised.”
