Student recycling rewarded

It’s the UK’s first ever Climate Change Week (21-27 March), and a chance to think about practical ways we can create a more sustainable future.  Coleg Gwent students have been rewarded for their contribution to recycling after the College recycled 75% of all college waste and prevented 562 tonnes of waste going to landfill over the last two years.

Coleg Gwent’s waste contractor Amber Services presented a cheque for £100 to Students’ Union Sabbatical Officer Mary Prescott in recognition of students’ successful drive to increase recycling across Coleg Gwent’s five Campuses.

Amber Services Sales Director Amber Hampshire said: “We are delighted to present Coleg Gwent students with a reward for all their work successfully promoting and encouraging recycling across the College.”

Over the past two years Coleg Gwent students and staff have successfully achieved environmental targets, and have made some big improvements towards sustainability including:

  • Achieving Green Dragon Environmental Management Standard level 5
  • Recycling 75% of all college waste produced equating to 562 tonnes of waste prevented from being sent to land fill sites
  • 100% of all paper, cardboard, cans, and plastics disposed of via dedicated bins was recycled
  • 4.10% reduction in the total energy used throughout the college
  • 15 % reduction in direct CO2 emissions

Health, Safety and Environmental Manager Ian Rowe said: “During 2009-2010 the College achieved a number of realistic but challenging targets to ensure continued improvement in managing its environment and sustainability.  It’s fantastic that Amber Services have recognised students’ contribution and commitment to making Coleg Gwent a greener college.”
