After two recent victories Crosskeys Campus rugby team are finalists in the Welsh Rugby Union Colleges League and will battle it out for the championship crown with Coleg Sir Gar on Wednesday 13 April.
Following a fantastic season winning 11 out of their 12 games, the team beat Gower College Swansea 14-5 and Bridgend College 29-9 to qualify for the final which will be played at Brewery Field Bridgend. The team then topped the table after their final league game against Gower College Swansea which ended 25-20.
The team also won a resounding victory against Henley College Coventry in the quarter finals of the British Colleges Cup, winning 58-0. They will play Coleg Sir Gar in the semi final match.
The Newport Gwent Dragons Academy is based at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus, and 12 students also took part in a recent Dragons Academy match against the touring Japan U18 team at Rodney Parade in Newport which finished 32-22 to the home side.
Sports Lecturer Steven Llewellyn said: “The team are delighted to be in the final of the WRU Colleges League and are preparing for a tough final match.
“Students have done incredibly well this season and have made excellent progress, building on each success. We hope to complete the season by winning the cup. This will be just reward for the hard work and effort that has been put in by the players and coaches this season.”
It’s a big year for rugby at the Campus, as students look forward to playing against schools in a rugby tour to New Zealand and Hong Kong during the summer.
