Students bridge the gap on charity walk

From Wales to England, 30 Coleg Gwent students and two staff walked the length of the old Severn Bridge for St David’s Foundation Hospice Care, and raised over £600 for the charity.

Health and social care students based at Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus raised a total of £602.40 for the charity on the hour-long walk to English soil, wearing bright pink t-shirts in support of the foundation.

Coleg Gwent students regularly take part in charity or community work as part of their qualifications, and after inspiring visits from St David’s to explain their work and services, the group were inspired to put their best foot forward to help.

Health and social care student Abby Evans, 19 from Ringland said: “We all enjoyed fundraising for the foundation, especially as the services benefit people in our local communities.”

Another student Samantha Griffiths from Newport, managed to raise over £100 in sponsorship for the charity, with help from generous visitors to the pub where she works part-time.

The proud fundraisers presented a cheque to Sally Rees, Community Fundraiser for St David’s Hospice Care, she said: This is the fifth year that the department have supported us, and we’re extremely grateful to staff and students.  It’s excellent to see young people helping this great cause.”

“Students enjoyed the walk and felt they took part in something really worthwhile,” said Tutor Linda Bailey.  “A lot of people in the local area use St David`s services at some point in their lives, it’s such an important part of the community so it was fantastic to be able to show how much we appreciate them.”
