The Graduate Centre in Swansea University’s Research Institute for Arts and Humanities (RIAH) has seven Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) fully-funded research studentships available for 2012-13.
The studentships on offer will allow successful applicants to study in many different ways from traditional, academically focussed Doctoral Awards to Professional Preparation Masters that provide skills and competencies that can be used in the work place.
The Professional Preparation Masters in Creative Writing at Swansea, for example, offers integrated training in the writing of literary and media text and is taught by prize-winning writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama who provide core training and individual pathways in the major genres of contemporary literary and media writing.
There are also more traditional academic awards on offer like the Doctoral Award in History and the Masters by Research in History that is a brand new course ideal for students who would like to do a research degree without committing themselves to a PhD.
Students on this programme can study full or part-time and are examined on the basis of a 30,000 word thesis.
Subject backgrounds considered include: History, English, Welsh, Celtic Studies, Modern Languages, Linguistics, Media Studies, Translation, Film and Television Studies, Creative Writing and any relevant cognate subject areas. Applicants are encouraged to browse Departmental websites to explore potential research topics.
The studentships on offer are as follows:
- Doctoral Award in Celtic Studies
- Doctoral Award in Film and Television Studies
- Doctoral Award in History
- Masters by Research in History
- Professional Preparation Masters in Creative Writing
- Two Professional Preparation Masters in Translation and Interpreting.
Director of the Graduate Centre, Robert Rhys said: “This significant investment from the AHRC will reward a number of students and recognises the College – and Arts and Humanities – as a vital area for growth and investment.
“The Awards on offer allow students to study at either Masters or PHD level, and some are even offered as part-time making it a more flexible option for people returning to education. There are also new and innovative approaches to post-graduate study like the ‘Professional Preparation Masters’ for example, that provides skills for the work place and will undoubtedly help with the employability credentials of our graduates.”
Those interested in applying for one of the seven fully-funded studentships should check the eligibility guidelines and complete an on-line application form for postgraduate study or download a paper application pack and submit it by Friday, June 29, 2012.
