Summer fun on the beach – and you might just learn to save a life

A Surf Lifesaving Carnival and Taster Day will be held at Traeth Llydan/Broad Beach, Rhosneigr this Wednesday, 18th August between 10am till 2pm.

The event, organised by the Isle of Anglesey County Council Sports Development Unit and run by Surf Lifesaving Wales, aims to provide a fun day of beach lifesaving activities for all age groups, all tied in with the theme of Beach Safety.

It’s a sobering fact that between 400-600 people drown in the UK every year, and drowning deaths on beaches and in coastal waters year on year account for about 20% of this total. This event aims to highlight many of the dangers encountered, demonstrate various rescue techniques employed by Beach Lifeguards and will offer participants practical tips on the use of lifesaving equipment.

Members of the Anglesey Lifesaving Club are in the process of qualifying as Beach Lifeguards. It is hoped that during peak periods next summer, they will offer their services and provide voluntary lifeguard cover on one or more of Anglesey’s beaches. The hope is that this will be the first step in offering similar services on more beaches in the future.

Following the taster day on 18th August, plans are afoot to develop the sport of ‘Surf Lifesaving’ on the island, along lines similar to those seen in South Wales and other parts of the UK.

The Isle of Anglesey County Council’s Outdoor Activities Officer, Simon Jones explained, “Surf Lifesaving is a truly multi-disciplined sport, which takes place in the pool, on the beach and in the sea. With close ties to swimming, athletics, kayaking, rowing, surfing and power boating, it’s all based on the equipment and skills of Lifeguards. It plays an important role in keeping participants fit and healthy, whilst providing them with important water, safety and first aid skills. The qualifications that can be gained through the Royal Lifesaving Society and Surf Lifesaving Wales are internationally recognised, and may lead to employment possibilities in the UK and further afield”.

If you or your family are interested, then why not have a go? All are welcome, but depending on the turnout on the day, places for practical activities may be limited, so book now to avoid disappointment.  To book or for further information ring Simon on 01248 752016 or 07766 602 597.
