Children in Monmouthshire are invited to participate in an epic adventure this summer as Monmouthshire Libraries promotes the Summer Reading Challenge to develop a love of reading, gain confidence and obtain new skills.
Organised by The Reading Agency, this year’s theme is Mythical Maze, and children aged from four to twelve will be encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the summer holidays. With the addition of posters, stickers and other incentives to complete the challenge, it’s a highlight of the holiday for thousands of children. Teachers often comment that children who take part return to school as more fluent, confident readers.
Over 1,200 Monmouthshire youngsters took part in the challenge last summer. There is a different theme every year and children can read whatever they like – picture books, audio books, joke books, fact books all count. Adults also have the chance to enter their own reading challenge, setting a good example to the children and have the chance to win a prize.
By logging on to the Mythical Maze website children can keep track of their progress online, rate books for other readers and receive tips on what to read next. This year an app brings illustrator Sarah McIntyre’s amazing creatures to life.
Taking part is free and the Summer Reading Challenge is just one of many exciting schemes offered by Monmouthshire Libraries to inspire children to pick up a book.
