The country’s only A+ energy rated school will officially open its doors tomorrow (Thursday 26th January).
The Education Minister Leighton Andrews (pictured) will join the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Vera Jenkins and guests to celebrate the official opening of Greenhill Primary School in Gelligaer.
The school will be officially opened in a launch led by pupils in years five and six, who will present a short presentation they have created on their new school, before guests are invited on a tour of the building.
Greenhill Primary School has already received accolades for being one of the most sustainable primary schools in the country and has scooped two prestigious national awards for its ‘green’ features.
The £3.95million School won a ‘Sustainability Award’ at this year’s Consortium of Local Authorities in Wales (CLAW) Awards 2011. This latest honour closely follows the ‘Low/Zero Carbon Award’ at the recent Constructing Excellence in Wales 2011 awards.
The school has a highly insulated external envelope, four wind turbines and an array of solar panels, which turn daylight into energy. More electricity is generated on or within the school than it actually uses, and the surplus will be exported to the grid. Rainwater is also harvested to flush toilets, and over half of the water used by the school is recycled.
The brand new Greenhill Primary School building has come to fruition thanks to a Welsh Government grant.
