This summer 50 SuperDragons will be decorated and painted by local artists and those who wish to submit designs have until Friday 26 March to get their ideas in.
The five-foot-high, six-foot-long and two-foot-wide sculptures weigh 60kg and once decorated and painted will create a magical trail through the city centre and surrounding area.
Whether you are a professional artist, a budding one, part of an art group, a set designer or photographer, we want your designs! They can be in any form from traditional designs to new media, incorporate photography or poetry – whatever captures your imagination.
Local artists are key to the project being a success and packs and information is available from the SuperDragons website. A review committee will choose the winning designs in April which will be replicated onto the sculptures. The chosen artists will start work in late April and the dragons will go on parade throughout the city and surrounding area in late July.
The SuperDragons trail is set to be one of the major highlights of the Newport Festival 2010 and local businesses are being encouraged to sponsor the designs. A range of sponsorship options are available and if interested in sponsoring a dragon, please contact the Newport Festival 2010 team on 01633 656656.
The dragons are made of fibreglass and will be decorated with paint and various materials chosen by the artist, before being given a coat of waterproof varnish to protect them from the elements. The designs will reflect Newport’s history, heritage, architecture, regeneration and art scene.
Once decorated, the SuperDragons will be placed at various locations throughout the area for a 10-week period, enabling residents and tourists to discover some of Newport’s hidden gems. They will be displayed on Newport’s streets, parks and open spaces and in late October the SuperDragons will be auctioned and money donated to charity.
Residents and visitors will be able to view the SuperDragons at no cost and a trail map will be available nearer the time of the event.
