SuperDragons looking for new homes

After 10-weeks of bringing a splash of colour to the city, Newport’s SuperDragons will now be auctioned at the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre on Wednesday 27 October.

Bids will be accepted on the 50 SuperDragons which includes the specially commissioned golf SuperDragon which was created to mark Newport being host city to the 38th Ryder Cup. Europe’s Ryder Cup winning captain, Colin Montgomerie, signed this SuperDragon when he visited the city earlier in the year and is expected to sell for a significant amount of money.

There will be a number of famous faces at the auction which will see proceeds go to the Born Free Foundation and Tenovus including Eastenders actor John Altman, Virginia McKenna OBE founder of the Born Free Foundation as well as Newport Gwent Dragons and Newport County players, Goldie Looking Chain and other entertainers.

The SuperDragons have been a massive success with residents and visitors following the trail across the city and taking in Newport’s tourist hotspots.

The five foot high statues were painted and decorated by local artists and are expected to generate a lot of money for the two charities. The mini SuperDragons that were decorated by school pupils will return to their respective primary schools.

Tickets for the auction are currently on sale and available from the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre. There are two price range tickets available, £15 which includes a glass of wine, canapés and the opportunity to meet the artists and £5 for auction only tickets. The auction will start at 7.45pm. There will be a raffle on the evening with the prize a blank mini-SuperDragon for the winner to paint and decorate.

The SuperDragons are currently being cleaned after spending the summer in and around Newport and will be on display in the Kingsway Shopping Centre. October 23, 24 and 25 will be the official farewell for people to bid goodbye to the SuperDragons and will be the last opportunity to see all the large and small SuperDragons in one place.

Telephone bids will be taken on the night as well as proxy bids with forms available to download from www.newportsuperdragons.co.uk
