Support for staff during difficult times

A major supermarket in Blackwood town centre is taking part in an innovative retail chaplaincy scheme to support its employees.

ASDA Blackwood has invited two local vicars into the store on a regular basis to meet staff and discuss any concerns they may have about any aspects of their lives.

Rev Matthew Tregenza from St Margaret’s Church and Rev Mark Thomas from Mount Pleasant Baptist Church are visiting the store each week to provide support to ASDA colleagues. The scheme is one of only a handful in operation across the country and has been warmly welcomed by ASDA.

Andrew Highway, Caerphilly county borough council’s Town centre Development Manager helped introduce the new scheme after being approached by local clergy. “These are challenging times for those who work in the retail sector and I am delighted that our local churches and ASDA have responded by developing an initiative that provides support for retail staff.”

It is hoped that the scheme can be further developed in the future and extended to other businesses in the area.

The Caerphilly county borough offers excellent retail opportunities for business, with the local authority recognising the importance of the retail sector to the wider regional economy.  The council’s dedicated Town Centre Development Manager co-ordinates the strategic and operational needs of these regional centres.
