Suzy Davies, Shadow Minister for Culture, is asking us to switch off TV for an hour on Thursday 6th March and enjoy World Book Day.
She is urging support for local events in her region of South Wales West, saying,
“World Book Day really is a local celebration that everyone can get involved with. There are activities being taking place all over Wales, including one at Sketty Library in Swansea where people take part in a coffee morning and quiz as well as sharing books.”
The Welsh Conservative AM said “Although World Book Day focuses on introducing more children and young people to reading, it is real encouragement for people of all ages.
“Reading can bring families together. When I was growing up I enjoyed reading with my parents and as a parent I tried to do the same with my own children. But I know that busy lives and other distractions mean that’s not as easy as it sounds these days so World Book Day is a reminder to make some time to read.
“Without high standards of literacy, children will never get the best out if their education. As well as leaving them at a disadvantage economically with limited choices. Missing out on fiction especially closes off access to new ideas and emotional exploration”.
Commenting on the Welsh Government’s “Bookstart” scheme, Mrs Davies said “The scheme gives families the chance to learn and develop English and Welsh language skills together.”
She added “with the World Book Day £1 books and vouchers, events at local libraries, and now online apps as well; there have never been more ways and opportunities to learn about new books and start reading or get back to reading.”
