Swansea East Assembly Member Mike Hedges AM is championing a local scheme which supports young disabled people living in Swansea.
The charity Whizz-Kidz, which provides children and young people with powered and manual mobility equipment also run Ambassador Clubs, where young disabled people can make friends and learn life skills through music, drama, sport and also campaign on local issues important to them.
Mr Hedges attended the Swansea Club’s latest meeting on Saturday 28th April, and took part in a question and answer session with the Ambassadors, who asked him questions about his role as an AM and discussed issues that affect them, such as accessibility for disabled people in Swansea City Centre.
Speaking from the event, Mike Hedges AM:
“I’m delighted to be lending my support to this incredible charity that helps to support young disabled people in Swansea.
“It was a pleasure to have met with ambassadors and volunteers from Whizz-Kidz on the weekend to discuss local issues in Swansea as well as discuss what can be done further to ensure that young disabled people get the right support and mobility equipment they need in order to live a free and independent lifestyle.
“I commend the fantastic work being done by Whizz-Kidz and also acknowledge the important difference it has already made and continues to make to the lives of children and young people with disabilities living in the Swansea area.”
Katherine Mattingly, Whizz-Kidz Ambassador Club Coordinator for Wales said:
“Providing the right wheelchair is only the start of a journey to independence – our ‘Ambassador Clubs’ give young people with mobility needs a space to meet new friends, have fun, and learn new skills which increase their confidence.
“Our aim is also for older disabled members to begin to mentor younger disabled people as part of the club programme – and all of the activities are driven by the young people.”
