Swansea Bay commended for food and drink excellence

Swansea Bay is used to getting awards for its stunning beaches but now the praise is also starting to spill over into the food and drink sector.

A series of awards mean the profile of restaurants and pubs in the area is being raised in the same way as beauty spots like Rhossili and Three Cliffs Bay.

The Maes yr Haf restaurant on Gower and the No Sign Wine Bar in the city centre are among the businesses to have been highlighted for their quality.

Maes yr Haf in Parkmill is in the running for The Good Food Guide’s Restaurant of the Year Award and the No Sign Wine Bar on Wind Street appears alongside London’s May Fair Hotel in a Visit Britain list of the UK’s top ten destination bars.

The awards have also been complemented by the opening of new restaurants in the city centre such as Cosmo, the Bangkok Cafe and the Grape and Olive at the top of Meridian Tower.

Other Swansea Bay food and drink treats residents and visitors have to look forward to include Swansea Market’s 50th anniversary celebrations a bit later this year and the Gorseinon Food Festival on April 16.

The Gorseinon event is being held at the Canolfan Gorseinon Centre and will feature local produce, musical entertainment, local crafts and school cookery competitions. It’s one of many local produce markets held across the destination that provide a local alternative that helps reduce the carbon footprint.

Frances Jenkins, Swansea Council’s Strategic Manager for Tourism, Marketing and Events, said: “We’re delighted that businesses in Swansea Bay, Mumbles and Gower are being recognised at a local and national level.

“The food and drink sector is worth over £53.89 million to the local economy so we need to ensure that we continue to drive up quality in order to keep attracting the high level of repeat visitors that visit Swansea year on year.”
