Swansea restaurant fined for hygiene offences

HygineA Swansea restaurant owner has been hit with a £7,000 fine after pleading guilty to a string of food hygiene offences.

Mr Hon Yip Hoh, owner of Swansea Oriental on Brynymor Road in the city, pleaded guilty to 14 breaches of food hygiene legislation and has been ordered to pay £500 for each offence along with £850 costs and a £15 surcharge.

The offences were discovered during a routine visit by Swansea Council food and safety officers in March 2009. At that time, a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice was served on the owner because of the poor condition of the premises.

The notice forced the premises to close immediately to prevent any further risk to public health.

John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “Our inspectors made a routine inspection of the premises in March this year. What they found gave them serious concerns for the health and welfare of the public and we were left with no choice other than to close the restaurant immediately.

“This Council works with local food-related businesses to ensure high standards are maintained in the interests of public health.

“However, this case sends out a clear message that we will take strict enforcement action against any premises that fail to meet their responsibilities and fail to comply with food safety legislation.”
