The first ever South West Wales Welsh Learners Ambassador will be presented in a special reception held on Swansea University’s stand at the National Eisteddfod of Wales on 4 August 2012.
Sue Carey from Newport, Pembrokeshire will be presented by Dr Christine James, the new Achrduid of Wales at three o’clock on the Saturday afternoon.
This will be Sue’s second honour within a space of a few months as she won the title of Pembrokeshire’s 2012 Welsh Learner of the Year earlier this year. She received the award in a ceremony held at Preseli’s Community Learning Centre in Crymych.
Former Education and Environment Minister and Welsh learner who lives in Pembrokeshire, Jane Davidson presented her with the award. She congratulated Sue on her success and for being such an example to others by enjoying the experience of learning Welsh.
During her new voluntary role, Sue will work closely with the South West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre who is part of Academi Hywel Teifi at Swansea University.
Sue Carey said: ‘‘I’m looking forward to fullfilling the role over the next twelve months. I hope to meet other learners and suggest ways that they can learn Welsh to the best of their ability. There is no simple answer but it’s important not to give up when the going gets tough.’’
Aled Davies, Director of South-West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre at Swansea University added: ‘‘I’m glad that Sue has accepted to take on this particular role over the next year. Learners in South West Wales will no doubt benefit from some guidance by an individual who has succeeded in becoming a fluent Welsh speaker. Her perseverance and willingness to use her Welsh at every given opportunity will be of inspiration to everyone.’’
