Over 1,700 students from universities across the UK will be arriving at Swansea University for the annual Frank Morton Sports Day.
The event, on the 21st February, is hosted for the first time by a Welsh university and is open to Chemical Engineering students.
Daniel Eade, President of the Chemical Engineering Society at Swansea University’s College of Engineering, is organising the event. He says, “We really wanted to host the event in Swansea and it was fantastic to be chosen to host it over other Chemical Engineering departments. It will be good to show students from other universities what we think is great about Swansea, from the beach to the sports facilities and nightlife.”
The event is named after Professor Frank Morton who lectured at the University of Manchester and had a passion for sport. The first competition in 1961 began as an interdepartmental football match and has expanded to include a one-day event with more than 20 universities across the UK competing in different sports to win the prestigious Frank Morton trophy. The gathering of chemical engineering students from across the UK will involve sporting competition, fun and networking.
Andrew Physick, a final year Chemistry Engineering student at Swansea University, went to the event held last year in Nottingham. He says, “It was fantastic! I met lots of people and chances are when I start my first graduate job, I will know the other starters because of this event.”
The Frank Morton Sports Day is the largest student event on the IChemE (Institute of Chemical Engineers) calendar. The event also includes a careers fair, with companies showcasing the opportunities for graduates in Chemical Engineering.
Swansea University has not won the event previously and will be in competitive spirit to be the winning host University.
