Swimmers dive into winter training

Pembrokeshire’s top young swimmers took part in a winter skills camp at the weekend.

Fourteen of the best swimmers from five County clubs pooled their talent at Crymych Leisure Centre on Sunday 14th November.

The training camp was the second in a series of three winter camps organised by Pembrokeshire Leisure – Pembrokeshire County Council’s leisure arm.

It followed a camp held at Milford Haven in October, while a third will take place in Tenby in January.

The nine to 12 year-olds were put through their paces by Paul Dowey, Pembrokeshire Leisure’s swimming development coach

The youngsters took part in swim sessions, land training and team building tasks.

“It’s important for the best young swimmers from across the County to get together regularly and train,” said Paul Dowey.

“It encourages them and helps them pick up tips to bring back to their clubs. And I’m grateful to Steve Parks of Milford Tigers and Penny Willars and Sarah Hicks from Tenby Dolphins, who stepped in at the last minute to help with the coaching and managing of the team.”

The skills camps are designed for youngsters who already swim competitively with their local clubs – Haverfordwest Seals, Milford Haven Tigers, Pembroke & District, Tenby Dolphins and Fishguard Flyers.

They are selected for the skills squad based on their 200m individual medley event results.

Anyone interested in joining a competitive swimming club should contact their local leisure centre.
