Swimming enthusiasts at Wales National Pool are dreaming of their own personal golds in the countdown to the Olympic Games.
Elite swimmers like Jemma Lowe and Georgia Davies who are based at the Swansea venue have already bagged their places in Team GB for London 2012.
But their example is encouraging community swimmers to achieve their personal golds and on March 24 the Wales National Pool Swansea (WNPS) is throwing open its doors to encourage even more people to participate.
Jeremy Cole, Interim General Manager at WNPS, said: “Our Dreams of Gold campaign is aiming to encourage people to be inspired by the legacy of London 2012.
“The pool is home to elite swimmers like Jemma, Georgia and Paralympic double-gold medallist Ellie Simmonds. But it’s also a community venue and Dreams of Gold is about encouraging people to be inspired by people like Ellie to set personal goals and then set out to achieve them.
“There’s been a lot of interest in the campaign already with children as young as four signing-up to Dreams of Gold as well as pensioners too. Wales National Pool would welcome even more people who feel inspired to achieve their own personal golds to come along and join in on March 24th or in the countdown to the Games.”
The March 24th event includes taster sessions for a variety of aquatic experiences including Aquacise, children’s play, water polo and synchronised swimming, there is a nominal fee for participants and 50p from every booking will be donated to Sport Relief.
Four-year-old Emma Howell has been swimming at the Wales National Pool since she was two. She says: “I can swim several widths on my front and back. But my brother Ben is a very fast swimmer and I want to be as good as him. Whenever I come to WNPS I spend time looking at the trophy cabinet and I hope that one day I will win a trophy that can be displayed there too.”
Paramedic Grayham Mclean is a regular swimmer at WNPS and he says he’s amazed at the dedication of the early morning swimmers he dubs the First Team, none of whom are aged under 65. He said: “My gold is to be able to continue to remain fit and enjoy my swimming, especially now that my two young daughters have made the WNPS the centre of their universe.”
