A new programme of walks has been developed which promises to offer ramblers and history buffs the chance to take in the stunning countryside around Gelligaer while learning about the area’s rich Roman history.
Caerphilly county borough council’s Countryside Services and the Roman Fort Working Group have developed a series of free walks giving local people an exciting opportunity to explore the rich heritage of Gelligaer and its surrounds, led by qualified guides… and better still, the walks are free!
The walks focus on the remains of the Gelligaer Roman Fort, a cornerstone of the Roman military network that controlled south-east Wales for over 40 years. They will also take in the wider countryside and farmland of the Caerphilly county borough including sites of the old Roman practice grounds on Gelligaer Common. This history of the area will be brought to life through the interpretive skill of professional guides.
The walks will take place on the following dates and all start at 2.00pm: –
- Sunday October 17th
- Saturday October 23rd
- Sunday October 31st
- Saturday November 13th
- Sunday November 21st
- Saturday November 27th
Stout footwear is required and the walk is classed as easy/moderate with some walking on soft/uneven ground.
All tours depart from St Catwg’s Church (main gate) and will last 1 to 1.5 hours, including a complimentary refreshment stop along the way.
